John Robert Holmes has found a way to pay for his expensive hobby. The 26-year-old, who began playing around with radio-controlled cars as a boy, started a Web-based business in 2005 called holmeshobbies.com, which is dedicated to the hobby of radio-controlled rock crawlers.

For the past 152 weeks, your favorite columnist has led a birding field trip to Missouri Department of Conservation areas in Central Missouri, helping build seasonal bird lists for almost 200 of the department’s 800 areas statewide.
GRANNY'S NOTES
Donated liquor leads to Christmas grudge
By SUE GERARD
Chub and I had our share of ups and downs, disagreements and differences of opinion in 60 years of marriage. But there was one argument - only one - that followed us for years. It had to do with Christmas gifts, property rights and things like that. I hasten to admit that I was the sure loser when this topic popped up in conversations. As the saying goes, "I done bad!"
THE THIRD AGE
We need to balance the needs of all generations
By ANN GOWANS
A new report from The Institute for the Future, along with MetLife Mature Market Institute, found that members of the baby boom generation would, as they have in the past, be resourceful and self-reliant as they age. They are expected to form economic, health and social collectives and families of choice, to adapt to the future.
NOTES FROM BOOMERANG CREEK
Family, friends, faith, love recipe for happy marriage
By CATHY SALTER
My youngest sister, Kelly, was born when I was 10 years old. She came home from the hospital to begin life with my parents and three sisters - ages 12, 10 and 6 - who were thrilled to have a live doll to dote over, spoil and tote around. From the start, Kelly was long-limbed and the most adorable baby any of us had ever seen. Fifty-three years later, she is still our little sister - tall, slender and as beautiful as ever.

Fires the reason behind downtown built of brick
By WARREN DALTON
In my research of Columbia in the early 1800s, I saw many of the commercial buildings were built of wood. When Debbie Sheals published a bulletin on the downtown Columbia Historic District, it showed most of the buildings in the late 1800s made with brick.

Train yourself to be consistent with dog
By SUSAN HATFIELD
There are many different types of dog training. My husband, John, uses clicker training. It makes me nuts hearing that "click" all the time, but he is very good at it and has been extremely successful in training many dogs over the years using that method.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Bishop’s Storehouse looks like any other grocery store at first glance: The shelves are neatly lined with canned goods, and the smell of fresh bread wafts through the aisles.

Susan Gray's newsletter fit to be called literature
By BILL CLARK
One of Ol' Clark's year-end holiday joys is sending and receiving family newsletters. Many folks absolutely detest them; I can hardly wait to put 400 in the mail and hope to get at least 400 in return.
